Kerala (കേരളം) is a tropical state on India’s south-west coast. Known for coconut palms, spice-growing hills, backwaters and coastal food culture.
The name Kerala is often linked to "kera", meaning coconut tree, and coconut still gives many dishes their body, softness and richness. The region is also known for its priced spices and aromatics such as Malabar pepper, Idukki cardamom, Edayur chilli, Thalanadan clove and kudampuli.
